The Enemy of Learning is Knowing

By Tina Zawila

We recently attended the UHY International Conference in Sydney, where a speaker said something that really stuck with me: “The enemy of learning is knowing.”

It was a powerful reminder that no matter how long we’ve been in business, or how much experience we’ve gained, there’s always more to learn. In fact, the moment we think we “know it all” is often when we stop growing.

For small business owners, this mindset can make a real difference. The world is changing faster than ever — from technology and AI toc hanging customer expectations and new tax or compliance rules.  Staying curious and open to new ideas isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore; it’s essential for staying competitive and resilient.

Ongoing learning doesn’t always mean formal study. It can be as simple as attending a workshop, listening to a podcast, reading industry updates, or connecting with peers to share ideas.  Each time you learn something new, you gain tools to make better decisions, streamline operations, or spot opportunities you might have otherwise missed.

As a Chartered Accountant who works closely with small business owners, I’ve seen firsthand how a willingness to learn can transform a business.  At UHY we offer group workshops for local business owners throughout the year — practical, down-to-earth sessions designed to share insights, answer questions, and help you run a better business and make sense of a fast-changing environment.  These workshops are also an ideal opportunity to listen and learn from other business owners – their shared experiences, questions, achievements and challenges.

Because ultimately, learning is what keeps us adaptable, confident, and future-ready. The most successful business owners I know are the ones who never stop asking questions.
